Australia Moves to Ban Iranian Visa Holders Entry for 6 Months
Effective Thursday, the six-month ban — enacted under recently strengthened immigration legislation — bars affected visa holders from entering Australian territory, representing one of Canberra's most significant immigration responses to the Iran crisis to date.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke defended the measure in an official statement, warning of the risks posed by a prolonged conflict. "The conflict in Iran has increased the risk that some temporary visa holders may be unable or unlikely to depart Australia when their visas expire," he said.
The restrictions, however, carry notable exemptions. Iranian nationals already on Australian soil, immediate family members of citizens or permanent residents, and individuals granted special dispensation under defined circumstances will not be affected. Burke also confirmed that visa applications from Iranians may continue during this period, with parents of Australian citizens to receive "sympathetic consideration." He added that the government "is closely monitoring global developments" and stands ready to revise its position as the situation evolves.
The announcement drew swift and sharp condemnation from legal experts and human rights advocates. Sarah Joseph, an Australian Professor of Human Rights Law at Griffith University, pulled no punches in her reaction, branding the policy "disgusting."
Taking to US social media platform X, Joseph wrote: "Iranian visa holders temporarily barred from travelling to Australia due to the risk that they don't play football. Disgusting decision."
Migration lawyers echoed similar concerns, questioning both the proportionality and fairness of the blanket restriction.
The decision unfolds as Iran remains locked in an active war with the United States and Israel, a conflict that erupted on February 28. Tehran has reported that the fighting has so far claimed the lives of more than 1,300 Iranian nationals.
