Istanbul, Gulf Hubs Gain German Travelers to Asia
“Air travelers generally have a wide range of options on which airline to take to a long-haul destination,” the report said, noting that Istanbul, Doha and Dubai are gaining popularity because they offer lower fares and broader connections.
A joint study by German aviation organizations found that transfers through airports outside the European Union accounted for 54% of passenger traffic from Germany to the Far East and Southeast Asia in 2024. The share had stood at 43.8% in 2019 and 33.7% in 2010.
The strongest growth came through Turkish and Gulf airports, with their combined share more than doubling from 12.6% in 2010 to 28.2% in 2024. Meanwhile, direct services from Germany and connections through German hubs fell from 56% to 36% over the same period.
The study highlighted Turkish Airlines and Istanbul’s new major airport, along with Dubai and Doha, as important factors behind the shift. In addition to offering cheaper fares, these hubs can provide more convenient itineraries, enabling travelers to reach destinations as far away as Australia with a single stop rather than making two connections through Western Europe.
